A server: what is it?

A server is a particular type of computer (or software) that receives requests and responds with the requested data. Every time you use the internet, whether it be to send an email, play an online game, or visit a website, a server is assisting in its operation.

Servers facilitate communication and information sharing between various devices, such as your computer, tablet, or phone. They play a significant role in the operation of the internet.

When you open a browser, the web server sends you websites.
For example, the web server displays Google's homepage when you type www.google.com.

Your emails are sent, received, and stored by the email server.
As an example, when you click "send," your emails are sent from Gmail's servers, which store them.

File servers hold files that users can access and share from various computers.
Example: Employees may be able to access reports stored on a company's file server.

Database servers store structured data used by websites and applications.
For instance, a database server assists in locating the product you're looking for when you search on Amazon.

Game Server enables multiplayer online gaming, keeps everyone's access to the game world up to date such as servers for Call of Duty or Fortnite.

DNS Server (Domain Name Server): Assists your computer in locating the correct web address.
In this case, the DNS server notifies your computer of Google's location on the internet when you type google.com.

File Transfer Protocol Servers (FTP servers) use the internet to transfer files between locations. For instance, web developers may use an FTP server to upload files to a website.

Proxy Server serves as a go-between for you and other servers, can be useful for speed, security, or privacy.
For instance, some businesses restrict what their employees can access online by using proxy servers.

Application Server manages the inner workings of applications.
For instance, the app server handles your request, looks up information in the database, and provides you with options when you book a flight.

Media server that streams and stores images, music, and videos.
For instance, media servers are used by Netflix and Spotify to deliver movies and music to you.
Imagine at restaurant,
You take a seat at the table, which is your phone or computer.
You browse the menu and place your order, which is equivalent to opening a website and requesting information.
A chef, who functions similarly to a server, prepares your food in the kitchen.
The food is brought to your table by the server (a restaurant employee), who also transmits data back to your device.
