Setting Up Utilities Hat

When moving off the campus, students are often required to pay for utilities themselves. Here’s how to tackle the most common ones:

Electricity

How to Set It Up:

Call the local electricity company (this should be included in your lease/landlord document). Most times, a lease document, proof of identity, and a deposit/SSN are enough to complete the process.

It’s usually best to complete the setup before moving in.

Gas for Cooking and Heating

In some apartments, hot water and heating are powered by gas.

Just like electricity, you contact the utility company, provide the lease, and set up a date for the connection.

Safety Tip: It is best to periodically check the carbon monoxide alarms.

Sewer and water

Most likely is included in rent but again, check your lease.

If it is included, it is usually handled by the county or city utility office. It is in your best interest to open an account as an individual.

Ask your landlord if water bills are bundled with the fees for removing garbage or recycling.

Internet and Wi-Fi

Choose a local company which can be Xfinity, Spectrum, AT&T or Verizon.

Though some plans offer flexible terms or student discounts, most require a 12-month contract.

Since the start of the semester is very busy, make sure to have your installation scheduled a week before move in.

Expert Advice:
Ask your landlord if specific buildings have pre-assigned providers or bundled utilities.

Your specific city may dictate a utility cost that is an additional 100-200 dollars a month. Plan your budget accordingly.

Make sure to set your calendar reminders: Tardiness in payment can lead to service termination which may come with extra charges for reconnection.

Talk to your roommates:
How to split utility bills is a decision that needs to be made beforehand. Splitwise or similar software can be useful.

While utilities may seem difficult to set up in the beginning, once accounts are active the main focus is keeping track of the bills. Setting up a smooth transition is best achieved with some planning.
